Revisiting Brideshead
The Granada serial that took a nation by storm, a critical
and commercially applauded success, the acclaimed 1981 adaptation
of Evelyn Waugh's classic ‘Brideshead Revisited' returns
to ITV3 On October 17th at 10pm.
Supporting this must see reappraisal on ITV3, as part of ITV's
50th anniversary celebrations, is a one-hour documentary exclusive
that features in-depth interviews with the stars of the series–
Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews and Diana Quick along with follow
cast members Jane Asher and Nicholas Grace. Examining the novel
and the series cultural commentators such as Gore Vidal, Peter
York, Paul Morley, Tina Brown and Cristina Odone contribute their
own particular views about the Brideshead phenomena.
The documentary affords a 360' view of both the novel and the
subsequent television series providing the ultimate introduction
to a series that remains a firm favourite with viewers. Filmed
on location in America, Hungary and England the documentary uncovers
some of the stories and secrets from the making of the series
including casting trivia such as originally, producer Derek Granger
asked Jeremy Irons to play the role of Sebastian Flyte. With an
in-depth look at the trials and tribulations of the series getting
to the screen – a strike by ITV technicians forced the production
to close down for a number of weeks – the directors –
Michael Lindsay Hogg and Charles Sturridge talk about filming
perhaps the most expensive British television drama production
ever.
With guests such as David Liddiment, Jenni Murray and Michael
& Sandra Howard MP recounting their admiration of the show
the documentary will take a nostalgic look back almost twenty-five
years to a kind of series that they just don't make anymore!
