Celebrating the 30th anniversary
of this classic comedy, we look back at the madness and mayhem
that was Fawlty Towers. Expecting Fawlty Towers to be a “little
show on BBC2 that no-one would notice” - its creators John Cleese
and Connie Booth never expected it to become one of Britains most
loved, most enduring and most quoted shows!
Our 12 shorts take a loving
look at the favourite characters of the series, Basil, Sybil,
Polly, Manuel and of course The Major and Old Ladies. Other shorts
are dedicated to the guest characters, the writers and include
contributions from Prunella Scales, Andrew Sachs, John Howard
Davies, Tim Brooke-Taylor and many more.
We examine the marriage of
Mr and Mrs Fawlty:
"I think originally it was probably a very passionate relationship
he thought she was quite attractive in a barmaidy way and she
thought he was quite attractive in a posh way, …… I think they
remain deeply fond of each other underneath it all …"
"It was my idea that she should
be less posh than Basil which is one of the attractions for her
in him... "
Prunella Scales (Sybil Fawlty)
.....and the enduring appeal
of Fawlty Towers :
"When the public acclaim came
it was amazing and it still Is, unbelievable!"
Andrew Sachs (Manuel)
"My abiding memory of Fawlty
Towers is laughter, laughter and more laughter, it makes me laugh
even now to think of some of the scenes 30 years later …"
John Howard Davies (Series 1, Producer/Director)
