In a few short months, Eminem went from being one of the most heralded
em-cees in independent hip-hop to one of the most provocative, controversial
rappers in the history of pop music. The overnight success of his debut
album, The Slim Shady LP, literally rocked the rap world, making him one of
the biggest music success stories of 1999.
Public Eminem #1 examined the furore that followed Eminem wherever he went -
especially in the UK after the 2000 tour when his entourage arrived to
play a number of dates starting a full-scale showbiz scare that had the
moral panic police on standby alert. Was the real slim shady a threat to
the nation's youth? Was he encouraging them to take ecstasy? What were the
chainsaws for?
This cut and thrust 60-minute Play UK profile examined the cultural miasma
that has surrounded Marshall Mathers since he renamed himself as Eminem and
took his white rap to the people. The backbone of the film was the
available BBC and record company archive intercut with specially shot
interviews, animations and raw opinion to create a fast, furious and fevered
over view of the Eminem extremities.
