As founder of Free @ Last Barry Ryan has a track record in innovative
television across a multiplicity of programme styles and genres.
After running a media and cultural studies department A BBC Production
trainee, Barry worked across all of the BBC Departments and contributed
his creative, producing and directing skills to a variety of successful
programme titles including; 999, Live & Kicking, Animal
Hospital, Zoo Watch Live, Hospital Watch, Newsnight, The Late
Review, Electric Circus, Horizon: The Science of Star Trek &
Holiday before joining the team of the leading music magazine
the O Zone in 1996 and directing the Oasis at Knebworth special.
Barry joined the launch team of live Saturday morning music magazine
The Noise for ITV1 directing packages, music performances
and special editions in Ireland, Poland and Sweden.
When the Noise finished Barry rejoined the BBC and the O Zone
team as a Senior Producer in the BBC Music Entertainment department
Series-Producing weekly music magazine O Zone, the teenage spin
off the Pop Zone and producing and directing factual coverage
of BBC music events such as Glastonbury, The Country Music
Awards, and The Hot Press Awards from Dublin.
Barry also produced and directed one-off specials including;
The Ballad Of Yoko & John (BBC2), Janet Jackson:
Beyond the Velvet Rope (BBC2) and Miami Spice for
Channel 4, which featured the world's first post-Geri interview
with the Spice Girls. For Carlton TV/ITV Network Barry co-produced
and directed the documentary elements of the massive Happy
Birthday Tina Turner. For Channel 4 The Dogs Balearics,
which won an RTS award for originality and creativity in craft
& technology.
Barry joined digital channel BBC Choice as a Series Producer
at the Documentaries & History production village leading
an inexperienced team and delivering 22 Theme Nights and a pioneering
DV documentary series called Real Lives including a documentary
shot on New year’s eve in Siberia with British DJ Dominic
Spreadlove, Moving to the BBC’s Birmingham outpost as development
executive he devised daily live interactive property format Housecall
as well as daytime quiz The Brain Game and developed
ideas for Made In Britain, the BBC’s coverage of
London Fashion Week.
Joining Straight TV he Executive Produced both Planet Pop
and The Dogs Balearics for STV/Channel 4 as well
as leading the company into the digital age with a multi-channel
development strategy.
As well as continuing to produce and direct selected Free@Last
TV productions, Barry Executive Produces all of Free@Last TV’s
output as well as leading the company’s project and business
development strategy. He is also a leading consultant in media
development and production matters for a variety of clients including
Shalit Global Management, SONY-BMG Commercial and various music
and entertainment managers. |
